Should we be grateful

The Red Wings announced today that they would be freezing their ticket prices at the 2003-04 level. That's great, because I thought that even though they had cut their payroll in half, they were going to raise their prices.

That's not the only brilliant news coming from the skating rinks though. The NHL finally has a TV deal, with the Outdoor Living Network. Yes, the network that brought us the Tour de France will be broadcasting the NHL. Not sure if you have the OLN? Just channel surf until you find the guy in a flannel shirt with the head of a deer on his lap and a carving knife going through the step-by-step process of carving a deer after the hunt. When you find it, you'll know you have OLN.

Oh, and they lifted the Todd Bertuzi suspension after twenty games, a suspension that cost him about $500,000. This, despite the fact that he jumped on another players back, blindsided him with a punch, and broke his neck.

But that is the NHL, a league that doesn't give a damn about its fans.

Kenny Holland said on 1270 this morning, that they are keeping teh reular season tickets thesame price, but if they make the playoff they will cut playoff tix between 10 - 20 percent. His reasoning was the past few season they operate at a loss unless they go deep in teh playoffs, this way they will make money during teh season, and not have to have crazy expensive playoff tix.

As far as Bertuzzi, how does the NHL allowing him to play show they don't care about the fans? Its more that they don't care about tehir players. that beng said I think Bert served a long suspension, He wasn't able to play ths past season in any tournements or other leagues. Nt sure why, but thats what I heard his agent say last night on ESPN radio.

I dont think OLN is on Cablevision in NY - way to go NHL - no TV coverage in the #1 TV market in the world. I guess I will be watching poker in May and June

If the NHL cared about its fans and protecting the game, they wouldn't give slap on the wrist 20 game suspensions for breaking someones neck. (of course, if they cared at all about the fans, they wouldn't cancel a season either) Fans want a game with integrity.

That suspension was a joke.

Holland also explained that their payroll is still fairly high because they have to cover all the buyouts.
