Modiin Miracles Update

Pitchers and Catchers is this Thursday in Lakeland...

The Israel Baseball League announced last week that Art Shamsky will be managing the Modiin Miracles. Shamsky, who is best known for hitting over .300 with the 1969 Miracle Mets, hit homeruns in four consecutive at bats in 1966, and that bat landed in Cooperstown. According to his web site, he also made appearances on Everybody Loves Raymond, and Ray's dog, Shamsky, was named after the former Met.

Another IBL franchise has disappeared. The Nahariya/Haifa team seems to have been replaced by the Ranaana Express. The IBL also has upgraded their web site, which canbe seen at www.israelbaseballleague.com.

The web site has a survey asking what people think of ending tie games with a home run derby. For me, I want to see them play until someone scores a run. This isn't the NHL. We don't have shootouts in baseball.

But, this is Israel, and they've never really seen or played baseball. The league may require some sort of gimmick to get fans in the stands. Hey, if you've never seen baseball before, honestly, the first time you watch it, it's can be pretty boring. So, they may need something to get attract people to the sport.

Where are the Modi'in goods? I still want my baseball cap? Is the logo as good as the Lion and King?

OC - It may not be the most exciting game at first glance, but that doesn't mean you mess with extra innings

Air, that may be true, and I agree with you. I don't think baseball games should be decided by a shoot-out. I don't like that hockey now does that. But, I also recognize that it will take time for Israel to warm itself up to America's past-time. Hey, I think soccer is boring, but I digress. It might, for better or for worse, take a gimmick to get Israelis to the game. That just might be the reality.
