Tradition Broken

Every Shavuot and Simchat Torah, our family BBQs for the second day lunch. It has been something we started about seven years ago, and something I highly recommend. We used to have Guest Poster Micha every year, but that ended when he got married and wasn't always home for that meal.

This year, we break with that tradition. We were invited out to lunch on the second day. Instead, we will be grilling on the first day of Shavuot. And this is where the Drive A Thon really starts to pay off for us. We had the Burger Buddys in Chicago. But on Monday, I get to grill the garlic and beef hot dogs from Romanian. Then we'll fry up some Romanian Corned Beef and Pastrami, toss it on top of burgers, and indulge ourselves in a meat frenzy.

Of course, we will prepare ourselves for this feast with a beer stick appetizer.

How does one barbecue on the Yom Tov, pray tell?

with charcoal it's no problem, you just throw on lighter fluid or use match-light, which airtime would never use, and transfer the flame from the yahrzeit candle.

With gas it is a little more tricky, but they sell a nifty device in Israel called a chagaz which is basically a shabbos clock for your gas grill.

rockofgalilee, thanks for the lesson in halacha. i truly have not heard of anyone barbecuing on yom tov before. we have a beauty of a gas grill, my hubby is the master barbecuer and probably would appreciate the "chagaz".
have a good, grillin' yom tov yourself!

what rock said, except that we have a special charcoal yom tov grill so we don't have to deal with turning off the gas issues.

From what I have been told by some, you could take something that will burn for a short time, toss it into the gas grill while it is still burning, and turn off the gas, so that you are not turning off the fire. But there seems to be some halachik dispute about that one.

I'm not sure why you think we would be away. I have been in the YIOP neighborhood every Shavuos since I bought my house in 1999. I have missed a few Simcha Torahs, but I think I have won the battle to make that a home holiday as well.

But you did miss a few Simchas Torahs, so we had to change the line up
