Ani Iparon - Urban Legend

OK. I talked to my dad about the whole Ani Iparon story. I had always thought that he told the story about himself, but when I asked him about it this morning, he said that the story actually happened to a friend of my grandparents.

Soooo, that, coupled with The Zwicker's comment that he heard the story from someone else, M from MKE claiming to have heard the story from his dad, the Rabbi telling us the story about his friend, and various YU publications working Ani Iparon into several articles, leads me to put this story in the urban legend category.

Has anyone else ever heard this story? Or variations of the story.

All I know is, my brother in law says "ani iparon" all the time. Let's chalk it up to a story that has injected itself into the national consciousness. Amen.

I never heard anything about a cop but "ani iparon" is all I know after 12 years of learning hebrew. Coming to think of it "como estas" is it's counterpart in spanish for me.

How was your day? "como estas"

Do you want pizza? "como estas"

I heard this exact story, in Israel, in the late 80s early 90s.

I was told to me as advice on how to deal with Israeli cops.

I particularly recall the story because I didn't know what Iparon meant and the concept was absolutely unfunny until it was explained. As a result, one of the few hebrew words I know today is Iparon.

"When I was in Yeshiva, my friend was jaywalking, and a police officer stopped him. The officer was yelling at my friend, who just looked at the officer, and then, my friend said Ani Iparon."

the first person nature of this story makes Rabbi a Liar.

i wouldn't call the rabbi a liar because you don't think that his friend had heard the legend and tried it himself.

You are an idiot.

Other stories from Israel (when told to me, people swore they were true, but who knows anymore...the expression "urban legend" hasn't been invented yet.

You know...this is too good to put here. I'm going to blog it now ;-)
