I think the Bnei Menashe didn't want to live in central Israel with all the other Jews, so when they divided the land they lived on the other side of the Jordan. Does that answer your question?
I read about them a while back (maybe a year ago). It's fascinating. It's interesting to see that Jews are not just Ashkenazim and Sephardim, there are also the Ethiopian Jews and (now we know) Bnei Menashe as well. I remember it took a while to mentally adjust to the idea of the Falashas (from Ethiopia) but it all does make sense. (http://www.falasha.org/)
