What you should know about anonymous

The truth is, we do know who Anonymous is. And although I don't feel like outing him here, there are some things you should know about him.

He was born and raised in Brooklyn.

He has four children, many of whom attended a modern orthodox mixed day school while he lived in Detroit. He blamed that on the lack of a decent right wing school in Detroit for his children to attend.

He currently lives in Israel, in Yerushalayim. I have heard him talking in front of his kids about buses going kaboom. Those children do take the bus every day.

He is a nationally recognized "smart person" by people who recognize those things. He is in Israel on some kind of prestigious fellowship.

Both he and his wife are very nice, very sincere people. He may be blunt with everything he says, but he is actually writing the things he believes.

He is definitely missed at the Sholosh Shudas table on Shabbos afternoon.

He denies being anonymous. But anonymous uses phrases that always works into conversations.

You can feel however you like about him. Like him, hate him, thats up to you.

People have asked me why I don't ban anonymous comments, because of that particular anonymous commenter. As obnoxious as he is most of the time, I don't mind reading his perspective.

We disagree on a lot of issues, but think that makes for interesting blogging.

There is a big difference between having a difference of opinion and the violent and abusive language he uses. I used to enjoy talking to him when he lived here in town, whether or not we disagreed. Now that he thinks he is hiding his identity on the Internet and using that "secrecy" as a blank check to write some really vile stuff, I can no longer respect him. It is only in deference to this being Air's site and therefore Air's decision that I will not out "anonymous" either. I know that I have now opened myself to attacks from "anonymous," but I really don't care.

zwicker,

how would you out anonymous if you were of mind to do that???

But it's good to know that you stand behind his decision for who to allow on his site.

as a champion of free speech and all things libertarian, i wholly support airs decision. well made!
and as a libertarian, i have no problem with anons positions, or how he chooses to state them. its his life, and if he chooses to spend it making abusive/insightful, vividly descriptive/obnoxiously vile, insulting/enlightening posts online, so be it.

though personally, i think he could use some female genital mutilation himself.

god bless america!

Rock,

Outing him would be easy since i know who he is. Most people who know him from his time in Detroit already have a pretty good idea.

Heck, I've never even been to Detroit (does Jersey count?) and I feel like I know him.

Air, just because some-one is academically "smart" and is in Israel on a "prestigious fellowship" doesn't make them smart and insightful. If that were the case, we'd really have to rethink our Noam Chomsky debate. Also, the guy said he was a woman. Was that just his wife or him trying to be humorous and degrading?

Anon, I support free speech also, but I believe that when some-one hides behind that and uses an anonymous title to feel that they can spout whatever garbage they want is abusive and cowardly. If some-one were to come on here and spouting off holocaust denial propoganda, would you still be supporting them? What's the difference betweem that and spreading lies about things that go on in Israel?

OC -

Whats the difference between someone saying that they are anonymous and someone saying that they are Olah Chadasha? Either way, there is no accountability for what one says, because in reality, both names are anonymous to the vast majority of readers.

The only difference is keeping track of who says what, and we pretty much know who anonymous is saying every time he types something.

I don't believe I said he is smart and insightful in his comments. They are obnoxious and crude. Still, with the exception of my kids behavior, I have rarely tried to stop someone from being obnoxious or crude.

The point here was just to let everyone know that anonymous is not some random stranger who somehow found this blog and just likes to harass people.

You have to admit that there is a critical difference between coming here and spouting holocaust denial propaganda and making the claim that Israel is a dangerous place due to terrorism. One is dangerously false, the other is a perspective that might make you uncomfortable, but as you know, is a fact of life in Israel that we either choose to ignore, choose to limit our exposure to dangers as best possible, or cower in fear from.

I don't know why he claimed to be a woman. You can ask him that.

Air, I totally understand what you're saying. And, s/he hasn't just come on spouting stuff about the dangers of Israel but lies and spouts false propaganda about practices in the country. These are some things you might expect to find in a HAMAS pamphlet. That's why I equated the two. If you want examples, I can go find them for you.

But, regardless, you're right. I had thought he was just some random wacko who found your site.
