It is December 21, 1997, and the Barry Sanders is on the cusp of becoming the third running back in history to run for 2000 yards in a single season. The game is a 4 PM affair, coinciding with Shimmy’s wedding, a marriage that will not withstand the test of time.
There is a small exercise room in the hotel with a TV, and many of the guests can be found crammed in this room, watching as Barry eclipses the milestone, ultimately rushing for 2053 yards for the season. The Lions win the game, and clinch a playoff spot as well. They will be playing Tampa Bay in the Wild Card game the following Sunday, in Tampa.
We have been planning a vacation for the week, although the plans were vague. Something about driving to Toronto and Niagara Falls before finally getting to NJ to visit the in-laws, and trying to eat in as many restaurants as possible.
Instead, we call down to Florida, and get two tickets for the playoffs.
We leave on December 24, our only child, at 18 months old, in his car seat, and head south. Since we have a few days to get to Tampa, we decide to take the scenic route, and stop in Charleston W. VA to visit my grandmother. She serves ribs and soup, and is thrilled to see us and her only great grand child. She wants us to stay longer, but after dinner, we jump back in the car, and head through North Carolina toward Atlanta. There is kosher food in Atlanta, and although it is Christmas Day when we arrive, we find a Kosher restaurant open.
After hanging out in Atlanta for a few hours, we are convinced that this is the perfect city to live in. It is clean and beautiful, and we love the downtown area and Olympic Park.
We continue to drive south, and we are in Miami in time for Shabbos, where we stay at Veev’s grandparents’ apartment. Shabbos is uneventful, and after Havdala, we drive to Boca to visit my grandparents. This is a critical point, because they have the tickets and are willing to keep our child all day while we are in Tampa.
It is a four hour drive to Tampa Bay, but we get their as quickly as we can, and are in time for the game. It is Florida, so I am wearing shorts and Lions Jersey. It is also freezing cold, and the Bucs fans next to us are wearing gloves and winter clothes. Not to bore you, but the game is a Lion tragedy, and they lose badly.
After the game, we play football in the parking lot. Lions fans against Bucs fans. Then we light the grill we brought, and eat something before beginning the long trip back.
I tell you this story to give Veev some street Cred. Not once did she say we shouldn’t go to Tampa. Not once did she not have a good time on the trip. Her only complaint was my recurring southern accent, which kept rearing its head on the drive. But what can I do, I was born in the south. Those are my people.
Also, I will tell you this. If you are ever considering a long road trip with an 18 month old, I highly recommend it. Children that age don’t need to stop to be fed, as they can hold their own bottle, and don’t need to stop for the bathroom, as they wear it with them.
veev isn't that bad! actualy she's pretty funny! and btw, matza in general is filling. you eat the same volume of matza as you do bread and you are going to feel sick from being so full (assuming you don't get sick before hand from the cardboard taste!
No, Mirty. I actually just bought this box last week. I have a weakness for Matzah. And I learned this Mai'chel from my Aunt in Israel who literally eats it 4 times a day.
And Mo4, try it with a little salt sprinkled on top. Gadlus!!
