Today's Detroit Free Press Headline

Can you guess today's top story in the Detroit Free Press?

It was "Lewis Out as Wings Coach"

It makes sense when you think about it. We are Hockeytown. And it looks like the yearlong lockout is coming to an end, according to most published reports.

So what could be more important than a story about the Red Wings coach. Certainly not four little bombs that went off in a culinarily-challenged country across the ocean.

You can see it here.

Gregg and Michelle were speaking on thios very topic today on live 97.1.
I guess teh rationale is it's the Detroit Free Press, not the World, or London Free Press. i bet if you went to teh page that deals with national news, you'll see that London came before Lewis firing.

It is ridiculous to have that as the lead story this morning. The News put a teaser in above the masthead, and I have no problem with that. But this story should not be here.

Jack, for a minute there I thought you were just a near sighted New Yorker who wasn't aware of anything that went on outside the tristate area. But then I noticed you are from LA, which brings me to draw one of two conclusions.

A) You're still bitter that the Pistons crushed the Lakers last year.

B) You're really bitter that the pistons crushed the Lakers, disappointed the Wayne Gretzky coudln't save hockey in LA, and keep wondering when they are going to play a professional football in LA.

Of course, you might still be cherishing that world series from 1988. I know I am still living off the 84 team. You might remember that one, as its where Gibby won his first World Series and had a 3-run homer to put an exclamation point on the series.

I was disappointed that we lost to a weaker team. Injuries and dissent killed us, we were our own worst enemy. The Pistons were a flash in the pan and proved it this year. They barely made it to the series and almost got swept. We won three championships in a row and were there 4 out of 5 years, that is pretty good.

See my first reply about the Pistons. Hockey is not a real sport which is why the NHL could disappear for a year and no one noticed.

It would be nice to have the Rams or the Raiders here, but that is ok. We get to see more football and have fewer disappointents to suffer through, like the Lions. ;)

I was disappointed when the Dodgers lost to the A's in '74, unhappy when we lost to the Yanks in '77 and '78 but thrilled when we beat the Yanks in '81. And as you mentioned, very happy about '88 because both the Lakers and the Dodgers won the championship.

But in general I am hardly aware that Detroit exists, other than when the local citizenry goes meshugah and burns the city down. ;)

Flash in teh pan? nearly swept? last I checked it was game 7 and it was tied going into the 4th quarter. and for some reason they didn't even televise the Lakers playoff run this season.

Last time I checked they struggled to make the championship going to game 7 in virtually every series. That is not the hallmark of a good team, it is the sign of one that is playing over its head.

They beat a Miami team that had an injured Dwayne Wade and Shaq which reminds me that they beat a Laker team that had an injured Shaq, Karl Malone, and Horace Grant among others.

Last time I checked the Lakers missed the playoffs this past season for the first time in more than a decade.

I could go into their records but the reality is that the Lakers is so far superior it would just be embarrassing to you.

Take your one championship and be happy there will not be another for a long time.
